Since we are focusing on Iceland this week, I decided to kick off with the capital, Reykjavik. This is often the first stop for many people on their trip to Iceland, since the international airport is only an hour away. The Blue Lagoon is also nearby, which means that even if you only have a short stopover in Reykjavik, Iceland, you’ll be able to experience one of the premier tourism destinations.
Reykjavik, Iceland
This Arctic Circle capital is a colourful and vibrant destination. There’s excellent museums, incredible food, local shops, and gob-smacking scenery. Reykjavik is a tiny city (population 125,000 approximately) with a compact city centre and friendly population. Reykjavik hosts a number of festivals each year, from music and theatre to crafts and fine arts. It is also both a family friendly and very LGBT friendly city.
Reykjavik, Iceland is the northernmost capital of a sovereign state.
What to do in Reykjavik
There is no shortage of things to do in Reykjavik, Iceland! Depending on the time of year you go, you will likely get a full day of sun. This means that you can experience much of the city well into the evening. Some people prefer to visit during the winter for the northern lights, though. There are several excellent companies that run luxury northern lights tours.
Within the city limits, there are some lesser-known hot spring pools, a few really good museums, and a brand new performing arts centre. My partners in the city can obtain tickets for almost any event. (There are also some nearby hot pools outside the city, like these amazing ones.)
My favourite museum is the settlement exhibition. I am someone who absolutely loves the Viking and Celtic history of the Shetland, Orkney, and Hebridean islands in Scotland. Visiting this museum in Reykjavik was like returning to the motherland. It was exciting to learn about the history from the people who lived it.
Other fun attractions in Reykjavik include the Perlan Museum, the Expo Pavilion inside the Harpa Centre, and the Old Harbour. This artsy neighbourhood is quickly up and coming as one of the best places for handmade crafts, freshly roasted coffee, and local spirits.
Luxury in Reykjavik
I have some great, amazing, wonderful Icelandic partners. These Virtuoso network partners are available to me to help ensure your trip is exactly what you wish it to be! Whether you want a private tour to some of the nearby geothermal attractions or just need a comfortable and quiet hotel room for a few nights, it’s all easily arranged… alongside a few little perks.
