This week’s focus is all about the Scottish Highlands, a destination long romanticised and made popular in modern culture by shows/movies like Brigadoon, Outlander, Highlander, and Braveheart.
The Scottish Highlands
The remote and often barren region north of Glasgow and Edinburgh is still one of the most beautiful, covered in gorse, thistle, and heather in the spring through fall, light snowfall in the winter, and heady blooms in the spring. Many include the Isle of Skye when discussing the Highlands; for the purposes of this series, I will too. Although, don’t be too surprised if it makes an appearance on its own in a few weeks… Skye has much to offer the adventurous traveller.
There is a certain mystique about the Scottish Highlands. After all, if you believe the legends, things aren’t always what they seem.
For example, in the 1954 film Brigadoon, Gene Kelly and Van Johnson stumble into an enchanted Scottish village. In Harry Potter, a magical castle stands on the hills – to Muggles (humans) it looks deserted and dangerous. In Outlander, a modern day book and TV series, standing stones transport Claire two hundred years into the past. And let us not forget Nessie, the infamous monster who makes an appearance in Sara Gruen’s The Water’s Edge. Finally, JM Barrie dreamed up Peter Pan while in the Highlands.
While I have to believe in the practical, it would not be Scottish of me to not believe in the impractical.
