I’ll be the first to encourage you to travel to far-flung destinations like New Zealand. However, I know that time and money constraints restrict even the most adventurous among us. There are some AMAZING places on our doorstep here in the States, and you don’t have to go that far to find them. If you’re still looking for a great winter destination for Christmas, New Years, or even mid January (beat those winter blues!), here are five great winter destinations (not far from your home).
Five great winter destinations on your doorstep
There is still time to book for this winter, especially if you’re happy to head for the snow. Places like Denver, Colorado – where you can still get to the mountains – and Vancouver, Canada are great for snowbirds. If you prefer the beach, Miami (and Fort Lauderdale) are excellent options. In fact, one of my favourite Virtuoso properties, Acqualina Resort and Spa, would be a great place to ring in the New Year! If you want to be in a city but are seeking great food and wine, then head for Boston, Massachusetts or Seattle, Washington. All cities are accessible on major airlines.
Denver, Colorado
Denver is a hot city, even in the coldest months. It’s one of the perfect winter destinations for travellers from the Midwest! Spend a few days in the city, exploring the little wine bars in LoDo (Lower Downtown) or the jazz haunts in RiNo (River North). Take a few days and hit the slopes. Winter Park is the closest mountain to the city, although Vail, Beaver Creek, Copper Mountain, and Aspen are also great places to go.

Seattle, Washington
I personally love Seattle for its relaxed vibe and spectacular surroundings. The city is surrounded by water, mountains, and verdant evergreen forests, and the views from town are stunning. Go for the food, wine, craft beer, coffee, music, and shopping. Pikes Place is a popular visitor stop (go early for the fish market), and its where you’ll find the first Starbucks. Seattleites will tell you that there’s better coffee, though, and you’re likely to find it at one of the cafes in Belltown or Ballard. There are four Virtuoso properties in Seattle, including a Four Seasons.
Similar cities: Portland, Oregon and Vancouver, Canada
Vancouver, Canada
Like Seattle, Vancouver is blessed with awe-inspiring surroundings. And like Denver, its got great ski/snowboard resorts within a few hours drive. It’s also got great shopping, incredible food and wine, and a fantastic music scene. Whether you’re after a romantic getaway or a family vacation, Vancouver does really have something for everyone. Stay at one of the Virtuoso properties, like the Fairmont or Four Seasons, for perks like upgrades, hotel and spa credits, and more cool things you can only get when you book through a Virtuoso travel advisor!
Similar cities: Seattle, Washington and Portland, Maine
Miami, Florida
For those of you that prefer white sand over white snow, head for Miami/Fort Lauderdale, Florida. South Beach is always hopping – perfect for music lovers – but there’s so much more than that. Winter in South Beach has a distinct Cuban feel and if you’re light on your feet you can hit one of the clubs to dance the night away.
Similar cities: Los Angeles, California or Las Vegas, Nevada
Boston, Massachusetts
It’s no secret I love Boston, and I personally think that it’s a great city in all seasons. There’s sublime shopping along Newbury Street, sunset cruises of the Boston Harbour, ferries to Cape Cod, and more. (And there’s no better time to be on a New England beach, in my opinion, than on a crisp winter’s day, all wrapped up in a cozy jacket.) In January, one of the Boston hotels hosts a wine series; you do not need to stay at the hotel in order to attend!
