The capital of New Zealand, Wellington, is a small one – but its feisty. There’s so many exciting things to do in and around the city, from hiking treks to unique wildlife sanctuaries, wineries, and historical museums. So many people skip Wellington, although in the past few years it has enjoyed international recognition. Personally, I love this city! It was the first New Zealand city that I lived in, and I continued to go back to explore. Since it’s a good gateway to the South Island, Wellington is the perfect city to end your North Island adventure!
Wellington, New Zealand
Wellington, New Zealand is at the far southern tip of the North Island. It is about an hour-long flight from Auckland, and about an eight hour drive from the same place. Welly is home to the government buildings, the national museum, wildlife sanctuaries, and plenty of great culinary exploits. It’s great for families, because there are so many outdoor activities, and for couples, because of all the fun date places!
On the doorstep is the Wairarapa, a remote wine region with spectacular scenery, and Cape Palliser, the North Island’s southernmost point. This is also where you’ll find one of the largest fur seal breeding grounds. From the city centre, it’s about a two hours drive (because you have to go up and and around), but just a short helicopter ride.
On the other side, the west coast is a popular local summer spot. If you have the time and resources, you can walk from Makara to the red rocks, which are at the edge of a Wellington suburb on the south coast. This walk takes about 12 hours, yet probably another 30 to 45 to walk back into the city; ideally you can arrange transport before you go. IF you do this, do your research as there are a few private lands through there, and no public huts. However, Makara is a great day trip if you have a car!
Over the course of this week I’ll be sharing various aspects of Wellington, New Zealand and why I think it’s definitely worth a stop on your New Zealand trip!
