This week, we are visiting one of my favourite countries in the world: Iceland! Iceland is a fantastic country for adventure seekers, but its got a lot for the luxurious vacationer as well. In the last five to ten years, Iceland really hit the big time as far as tourist destinations. While it is still expensive, the economic crisis in 2009 hit the country hard.
Iceland
The country only truly began recovering in 2012, when the tourism sector picked up steam. Like the geysers and volcanoes, the tourism industry is hot hot hot.
Over the next week, I’ll touch on various destinations within the country, beginning tomorrow with the capital, Reykjavik. Reykjavik is in the southeastern part of the country, and is home to the only international airport. Since everyone must begin and end their trip here, it’s a great place to spend a few days while you recover from jet lag.
Other popular spots include the Golden Circle, Skaftafell, Godafoss, and Jökulsarlon. The Golden Circle is an easy two to three day tour that can include everything from hiking volcanoes and exploring lava fields to soaking in natural hot springs. Serious adventurers should consider expanding their itinerary by touring the Ring Road, the main highway that circumnavigates the country. Skaftafell is a stunning region with glaciers, waterfalls, and intense hikes. Goddafoss is a vast waterfall in the north of the country, near Akureyri. Jökulsarlon is known as the icebergs beach, a gorgeous black beach littered with crystal clear icebergs. It is in the south, a few hours from Reykjavik.
Virtuoso does Iceland
Luxury abounds in this remote destination, from the hidden gems to the brand names. Hotels include two room cabins with every luxury you could imagine or grand hotels in Reykjavik. There are no Virtuoso properties in Iceland but I do have Virtuoso partners there that can ensure your comfort and luxury at any one of their properties.
Another option for touring Iceland is to go by cruise. There are over 300 Virtuoso cruises that port in Iceland. Some of these are our fantastic Virtuoso Voyages – reach out to me to learn more!
As always, tune in at 10am EDT for a weekly post about Iceland!
