This week (and next) we are heading down under! There are eight Australian cities to mention, from the tropical Darwin all the way to chilly Hobart, Tasmania. It’s my goal this week and next to share useful information for each of the Australian cities so you get a better sense of how different they all are!
Australian cities
Australia has two territories (Northern Territory and Australian Capital Territory), five states, and Tasmania. Each of these has their own “city” and some have more than one. Of course, I am focusing on the capitals of the provinces. The capital of Australia is NOT Sydney, despite what some people think. It is Canberra, located about halfway between Sydney and Melbourne. Sydney is the capital of New South Wales, one of the states, though. Melbourne is the capital of Victoria, Brisbane of Queensland, Darwin of Northern Territory, Perth of Western Australia, Adelaide of South Australia, and Hobart of Tasmania.
Australia is a massive country! It may not look all that big on a map, but the country is nearly 4,000km across from Sydney to Perth. In fact, it is nearly as large as the continental United States. That being said, you do need to be careful when booking transit across Australia.
The simple goal of getting from Point A to B to C could take you several days if there is a once daily flight or a twice-weekly ferry. Travel planning is key (and that is where a travel advisor comes in pretty handy!). Luckily, Virtuoso has plenty of onsites in Australia and I have access to all of them. Even if I haven’t been to the city, you are in the best hands with a Virtuoso travel advisor.
Adventures in Australia
I spent two and a half months in Australia, back in January-April 2017. During my time there, I drove between many of the cities, opting to hire one-way rental cars between Adelaide and Melbourne, Cairns and Brisbane, and Brisbane and Sydney. This was an excellent way to see the countryside, stop where and when I pleased, and explore off the beaten track.
However, Australian cities have a ton of great things to do, exciting attractions to see or experience, and delicious restaurants to wine and dine at. This two-week series will hopefully give you a little more insight into these cities at the end of the world. And, if you’re anything like me, I hope to inspire a little wanderlust…
To kick things off, I’m going to share the east coast cities this week: Brisbane, Sydney, Canberra, and Melbourne. Hop over to my Instagram for more photos of Australia!
